Patients Discontinuing Slimming Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

New research suggests that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise plans.

Published data in a prominent medical journal shows that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Users buying such medications should be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the medication concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a return to original weight within about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which examined dozens of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a slower creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections explains the heightened rebound.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.

"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

Health authorities suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy is often life-long.

This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of cravings.

"It felt as if something activating and you become ravenous," recalled a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.

Widespread Interest

Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, experts emphasize that while these medications are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and long-term success relies on combined behavioural management.
